mode transport planning was appointed by West Herts Crematorium Joint Committee to provide highways and transportation advice for a new crematorium on land to the south-west of Bedmond Road, Hemel Hempstead.

The site will comprise of:

  • A crematorium building including a non-denominational ceremony room, meeting room and Book of Remembrance room;
  • Chapel capacity of 138 seats;
  • Cortege’ entrances, set down and pick up areas, and office and administration accommodation; and
  • A crematorium landscape area including gardens of remembrance, area for internment of ashes and ashes scattering areas.

mode transport planning provided the following transportation and highways inputs to the application:

  • Pre application discussions with the Local Highway Authority to agree scope of assessment;
  • Production of Transport Assessment including:
    • Site access review;
    • Traffic generation and assignment;
    • Tracking assessments;
    • Highway safety review;
    • Parking accumulation to determine the suitable level of parking; and,
    • Junction and link capacity assessments to demonstrate that there was no impact on the highway network.
  • Post application discussions with both the Local Highway Authority and Local Planning Authority to address post application comments and limit client’s exposure to offsite works.
  • Attendance at the virtual public consultation.

The scheme was approved September 2020 at the Development Management Meeting and this has continued mode’s success on various crematoria sites across the country.
