TRICS Training and Development Forum 2023

TRICS Training and Development Forum was back for the first time, post-pandemic, this year. We sent our primary software users along to contribute to a discussion of the software’s future development.

TRICS® is the system of trip generation analysis for the UK and Ireland. It was first launched in 1989 and is an integral and essential part of the Transport Assessment process. Through continuous investment and development, the software has expanded into a comprehensive traffic and multi-modal transport survey database. Additionally, its uses cover a wide range of development types.

The system allows its users to establish potential levels of trip generation for their development scenarios using a series of database filtering processes. It is used widely by both transport planning consultants and local authorities.

TRICS® development forum

TRICS® is an integral part of mode’s service offering and to highlight how important the software is, mode sponsored this year’s ‘TRICS® Training and Development Forum 2023’ in Nottingham. We sent members of our team and frequent users of the software to attend the forum.

It was a delight to see how the members of the TRICS® team value feedback from its users. This feedback is crucial to implement additional land use classifications and more user-accessible software.

User feedback

Considering users’ feedback, the conference highlighted a variety of improvements. These included added features, development ideas, data collection and survey analysis in line with the changes in consumer travel modes. Furthermore, Ian Coles’ from TRICS® provided the first announcement on the implementation schedule of the TRICS 8 redesign. This will include an upgrade we look forward to using in 2024.

Also, as part of the forum, there were several key speakers, including Wayne Sayers from Dorset Council. He then provided strategic insight into several real-life working examples that utilised TRICS’ extensive and ever-growing database. This enabled showcasing new features and how they can be used in our transport planning.
