mode transport planning were appointed by St Modwen Homes to undertake the transportation work to support a planning application for a new residential scheme at the former Royal Doulton pottery factory in Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent. The development site, which has been closed since 2005, will will now be known as Kiln Gate. In reaction to the development Dave Smith, Managing Director at St. Modwen Homes, said:

Royal Doulton has a strong connection with Burslem and Stoke-on-Trent and we’ve designed this development to respect that heritage while developing its own new character for families to enjoy for the future. We are excited to be bringing St. Modwen Homes to Burslem to deliver these new much-needed new homes.

The 11-acre site will deliver 216 new homes across a mixture of houses and apartments. The former Royal Doulton factory shop will be replaced with a new sensitive design; the ‘Royal Doulton’ lettering, that takes pride of place on the factory shopfront, will be reinstated on the new building and the iconic factory gates will also be incorporated into the development.

mode provided the following transportation focused inputs to the development proposals:

  • detailed off-site junction capacity modelling;
  • 24hr review of predicted traffic flows for air quality and noise assessment;
  • site-wide parking review and accumulation profiles;
  • home zone proposals across the development;
  • servicing strategy;
  • TRO implementation and review;
  • discussions with Staffordshire County Council highway officers;
  • transport assessment; and
  • travel Plan.

The focus of the transport assessment and accompanying travel plan, involved an extensive review of the traffic impacts on the local highway network at peak times. At the same time, the plan balanced parking numbers and enhanced facilities for pedestrians and a review of public transport ensured that the development can be as sustainable as possible.
