Rugeley Power Station

mode transport planing has assisted Engie with preparation of a successful planning application for a mixed use redevelopment of Rugeley Power Station in Staffordshire.

The development proposals comprise up to 2,300 residential dwellings, a range of employment uses, an All Through School, local centres and public open space. The proposals are supported by a comprehensive range of sustainable transport infrastructure both within the site and linking to the surrounding area. This includes the town centre and railway stations with the movement and mitigation strategy focusing primarily on sustainable travel rather than increasing highway capacity.

The comprehensive transportation work included:

Identifying the quantum of residential development that could be accommodated no the surrounding highway network;
The design of a new access;
Upgrade of the existing Power Station Access;
Design of internal spine road through the site;
Provision of a range of pedestrian and cycle improvements;
Implementation of a new “branded” bus service;
Introduction of EV charing facilities across the development;
Improvements at local rail facilities;
Improvements to a section of canal tow path in close proximity to the site;
A comprehensive Transport Assessment;
Supporting Travel Plan;
Detailed s106 negotiation; and
s278 Highway Design.

The site was initially consented in December 2019, at two separate planning committees held by Lichfield District Council and Cannock Chase District Council; the application was resubmitted with minor amendments at the beginning of 2020 and again both planning committees unanimously approved the application on 27th July 2020.
