Collaborating With
Barts Health NHS Trust

Supporting Sites
Across London

Barts Health NHS Trust is one of the largest NHS trusts in the UK, operating five major hospitals and several specialist services and administrative offices across London. Our study was designed to support travel planning across the Trust’s key sites, which include:

  • St Bartholomew’s Hospital
  • Royal London Hospital
  • Mile End Hospital
  • Whipps Cross Hospital
  • Newham Hospital
  • Barkantine Birth Centre
  • Several NHS Trust administration sites

Updating the Outdated Green Travel Plans

Our project involved overhauling the Trust’s outdated Green Travel Plans to reflect the modern travel needs of both urban and outer London sites. While three hospitals are located within Central London (Zone 1), others are dispersed across the Greater London area, including Waltham Forest.

We carried out a detailed assessment of transport accessibility for each location, looking at proximity and connectivity to London’s extensive bus network, access to the Underground and the London Cycle Network, and the quality and safety of pedestrian routes.

Identifying Practical Improvements

We also reviewed the adequacy of secure cycle parking and evaluated whether nearby public transport stops were accessible for all users. This comprehensive review allowed us to measure each site’s current performance and identify practical improvements to encourage and support more sustainable modes of travel.

Our work included:

  • Collaborating with the Trust’s sustainability team
  • Auditing each site’s current sustainability credentials
  • Creating a bespoke scoring matrix for site assessments
  • Reviewing parking demand and usage
  • Developing and distributing travel surveys to staff and visitors
  • Analysing survey results to guide tailored strategies per site
  • Producing an overarching Barts Health NHS Trust Travel Plan with adaptable components for each site
  • Designing and preparing materials for interactive workshops
  • Hosting workshops with Trust representatives and NHS stakeholders
